OUR AIM

Yak Attack Members, participants, organizersExtreme World Challenges is normally a profit making organisation but does support local UK charities such as the Dogs Trust.  It was decided however to run Yak Attack as a non profit making event with an aim to benefit Nepali athletes and the Annapurna region (Western Nepal) communities as a whole on a number of levels.

Firstly by taking this event to Nepal and attracting international competitors we are giving the local athletes a chance to compete in a field that they would normally never be able to afford.  The average wage in Nepal is $70 per month and so to travel and compete outside the country is beyond the means of the majority of even the most talented sportsmen. A primary objective of this event is to support, provide assistance both financially and with equipment for the local riders and runners. The 2007 competitors took part with minimal support, inadequate equipment and without the advantage of sports specific nutrition yet still finished on average at least 10 hours ahead of their international competitors. The potential to find another world class athlete is immense.

Secondly by taking an event of this scale to the Annapurna region we will be directly financing local businesses.  All lodging and food etc used by the event is paid directly to the local communities which in turn benefits both parties, injecting cash into one of the most impoverished areas of Nepal (itself the 13th poorest country globally) and thus gaining the trust of the local communities for whom we can rely on for volunteer support in the future.  Indeed even the first Yak Attack invoked a huge amount of fascination and on numerous occasions all the competitors were treated to a ceremonious greeting and sending off by local dignitaries.

Another objective of the event and one very much welcomed by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) is to raise awareness of the diversity of activities available in the area. ACAP is delighted that the event, which will reach out to a world wide audience, highlights the opportunity to diversify from the norm of trekking towards mountain biking and trail running and thus provide potential to bring a whole new sector of environmentally sound  sports tourism to the area.

Perhaps most importantly, in holding this event Extreme World challenges hopes to create and concrete bonds between international communities and individuals and Nepali athletes.  In doing so we hope that long lasting friendships will be built, a better understanding of each others cultures will be realised and if through this the opportunity for only 1 Nepali athlete to reach his or her full potential and perhaps gain world wide recognition arises then it will have achieved its goal.

Any remaining profits left after providing for the needs of the local athletes and as importantly the porters used during the race, will go into a fund created between Extreme World Challenges and Dawn till Dusk mountain biking (the event supervisors and promoter in Nepal).  The Annapurna Region Resources Fund (ARRF) aims to provide resources to the poorer communities/individuals of the region.  Through direct contact with villages along the route and further afield and with the aid of local governing bodies ARRF intends to provide, on a small scale and in a non influential way, whatever is needed by the villages.  Be it books and pens for the schools, warm clothing for the elderly and infirm or sports equipment for the entertainment of the younger generations in these remote locations.  Due to the tolerance and kindness shown by the local communities towards all those involved in Yak Attack, Extreme World Challenges, Dawn till Dusk and the ARRF are committed to contributing to the needs of these villages.
